Ship ambience4/6/2023 ![]() ![]() In the UK we don’t gamble as much as in other places, so if a British cruise line buys an American or Australian ship, they normally replace the big casino with one that’s much smaller. We found a big pub area called “The Purple Turtle” which I’ve since found out used to be a casino. Looking back I’m so glad that I did because I wouldn’t have had a chance to do that later. ![]() One of my favourite things about cruising is the feeling when you first get onboard a cruise ship and you run around exploring as fast as you can! I didn’t have particularly high expectations after reading review after review online about broken toilets and broken air conditioning I hoped that the rest of the ship would be as nice as this area. The ship was decorated for Christmas and looked amazing.ĭespite the ship being from 1991, everything here looked very new and this area definitely surpassed my expectations. The problem was much bigger than that but at this point, we didn’t realise how widespread the problems were! EmbarkationĪs soon as we embarked the ship, we were in the middle of a beautiful Atrium. No big deal we thought, it isn’t uncommon on a cruise for things to be a bit delayed. My friends, Justin and Tristan, were told that they’d have to get theirs onboard as they weren’t ready yet. I picked up my cruise card which I needed to get into my room, buy drinks, and pretty much everything else onboard – it’s very important. Embarkation was pretty easy and, despite the bad weather, we were really excited to get on board. We boarded the ship in London Tilbury and were planning on heading to Bruges to the Christmas markets. During that time we had more problems than we would usually have on a full two-week cruise! Our cruise was cancelled 4 hours after we boarded and, in total, we were onboard this ship for about 8 hours. She was saved from the scrapyard by the new British cruise line Ambassador and I had booked a 3-night mini break onboard the ship. Photos by Fraser Gray and Jason Arthur.I recently disembarked what may be the shortest and weirdest cruise in history, on a ship that was planned to have been scrapped in 2020. Much smaller than her 70,285gt running mate, her passenger capacity is 1,200 compared with 1,400. Sshe sailed on just a few cruises for Aida before the pandemic hit and she was laid up off Tenerife.įollowing her sale, she is now at a shipyard in Croatia being prepared for her new role. Ibero Cruises later became majority owned by Carnival Corporation and, on the wind-up of the Spanish company in 2013, the ship was moved to Costa Cruises where she was renamed Costa neoRiviera.Īt 48,123gt, she was not a good fit with larger Costa ships, and in 2019 was transferred to sister company, Aida Cruises, who renamed her Aidamira. She passed to Ibero Cruises of Spain, becoming Grand Mistral. She was delivered as Mistral, in 1999, on a 12-year charter.įive years later Festival collapsed and the ship’s ownership reverted to her builders. The shipyard continued with the construction and later Festival Cruises took the ship on charter. Although ordered by Renaissance Cruises in 1996 from Chantiers de l’Atlantique at St Nazaire, the order was later cancelled. In October 2021 she went for refit at the Viktor Lenac Shipyard near Rijeka, and is now ready to begin her inaugural season with Ambassador Cruise Line.Īmbassador have acquired a second ship, which will be named Ambition. However, after failing to obtain insurance for the proposed operation, she was resold in 2021 for future operation by Ambassador Cruise Line as Ambience. They intended her to become a floating residence in the Gulf of Panama. Later in 2020 Pacific Dawn was sold to Ocean Builders Central, and renamed Satoshi. It was intended that the ship would be retired in 2020, sold to Cruise & Maritime Voyages (CMV) and renamed Amy Johnson, but CMV had financial difficulties and went into administration in 2020, affected by the Covid pandemic in 2020. In 2007 Regal Princess was transferred to P&O Cruises Australia, underwent major refurbishment, and was renamed Pacific Dawn, operating from Australia to South Pacific destinations. After 2000 she was deployed on the company’s Australian routes, then later in the Mediterranean and Baltic seas. She operated initially on their North American routes. Ambassador Cruise Lines’ new ship Ambience made her debut on the Thames at daybreak on 14 April 2022.īuilt in 1991, she was formerly Regal Princess (1991–2007) and Pacific Dawn (2007–2020), having been delivered to Princess Cruises in 1991 by Fincantieri shipyard in Monfalcone, Italy as Regal Princess. ![]()
